stand size

50 m² exhibition stand

On 50 m², the enclosed meeting room becomes possible — and for the first time, a second floor. What changes as a result.

Fifty square metres is the threshold from which an exhibition stand is no longer just a piece of standalone furniture, but architecture. It can accommodate a fully enclosed meeting room, several conversation zones can run in parallel — and a second storey becomes viable for the first time in terms of calculation.

Base area
about 7 × 7 m, head or island stand
Personal
4 to 6 people at the same time
Conversations
3 to 4 parallel, one of them closed
Warehouse
6 to 10 m², often combined with a plant room
Option
second floor worthwhile from this size onwards

What is now made possible

  • Closed meeting room with door, table for six people, acoustically separated
  • Several thematic islands for different product lines or target audiences
  • Bar or catering area as an independent point of residence
  • large-format media technology with its own spectator area
  • Second floor — doubles the usable area without any increase in site rental costs

The upstairs question

From 50 m² it is worth doing the maths. An upper deck creates meeting space without additional footprint and is often the only way to get more room at fully booked flagship trade fairs. However, it requires a permit, structural engineering calculations and an evacuation route concept with considerable lead time — and the stairs themselves take up floor space on the ground floor.

The correct comparative calculation

The comparison is not „upper floor versus more space“, but „upper floor versus no additional space at all“. At exhibitions that are fully booked, you won't get 100 m² — no matter what you'd pay. Then the upper floor almost always wins.

What matters in layout

At this scale, a new risk arises: the stand becomes a black box. If enclosed cubes block the lines of sight, visitors walk past on the outside instead of going inside. Enclosed elements therefore belong at the back or in the middle, open lines of sight on the aisle sides.

For an island stand without a natural back wall, the stand needs an architectural centre — a tower, a ceiling structure, a bar. Without this centre, a large open space looks empty rather than spacious.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance does an upper floor need to be applied for?

Several months before the start of the trade fair. Approval, structural analysis and escape route design have fixed deadlines that are non-negotiable.

Head-mounted stand or island stand?

Island stand for maximum visibility and unrestricted design, peninsula stand if you need a closed wall for storage and technology and want to save the extra charge.

How many stand staff are sensible?

Four to six at the same time, correspondingly more in the team on a shift rota. A 50 m² stand with two people looks deserted.

Is a stand of this size worth it?

From three to four deployments a year, yes, provided the design is modular and can be scaled down to smaller areas.
